Winter has arrived—and with it, more suffering and death. A massive new round of missile and drone attacks in Ukraine has destroyed power capacity by 40 percent just as a freezing winter is starting to hit the population. As a result, more than 1,100 towns and villages have been plunged into blackouts.

Many are unable to heat their homes because of the destruction of Ukraine’s electrical and heating infrastructures. Widows, children, and the elderly face a freezing winter without coal or wood to heat their homes. This has caused a new wave of people fleeing their homes to find refuge at local churches.

Even worse, churches, the only shelter for many people, may lose their ability to function due to power outages.
