After two years of war in Ukraine, we see how God continues to open hearts and minds to the Gospel. He uses the pain that Ukrainians are experiencing to draw them to Himself. He is awakening people like Olga, who shares in her testimony of how her family’s home was destroyed. They packed a few things and then “left for nowhere.”

But that “nowhere,” in God’s providence, became the loving community of SGA-supported Pastor Ruslan’s church when Olga and her family arrived in this region. As believers invite displaced people to the church to receive food aid, people like Olga are given so much more. They have the opportunity to receive God’s rest and His peace. Every Sunday, 100 to 120 IDPs [internally displaced persons] attend the Bethlehem Agronomic Church. The meetings are held in two streams. The visitors listen to the message from the Word of God, then attend small groups, then have lunch and then receive food aid.

Pastor Ruslan

A testimony from Olga and her family who survived in southeastern Ukraine:

My name is Olga. My husband’s name is Sergei. We are IDPs living in [this] region. We have lived in southeastern Ukraine since we were born, and my daughter Natalia lived with us. We lived in a five-story house in the same building as my sister and her family. And our parents and our grandmother (87 years old) were living close to us in their own house.

When the war started, my husband, daughter and I were hiding in the basement of the building. My sister and her family were hiding in the basement of the house with my parents and grandmother. When the city was shelled, and more particularly the metallurgical plant, our building and my parents’ house were destroyed.

In March 2022, my sister and her family, including our daughter, decided to flee the occupation. We had no contact with them for a month. Then our neighbors allowed my parents to live in a nearby empty house with a stove. We cooked on the stove and on the fire, and used the water from the well. We barely had enough food when Azovstal was bombed. Our neighbors, who had their own grocery store, were able to go to Donetsk and bring some food. Later, my sister found the volunteers and took our parents and grandmother. Later, the same volunteers helped us leave the occupation. It was very scary. We packed a few things and left for nowhere. Unfortunately, our buildings were all destroyed.

Thank God that we met good people on our way who helped us a lot. Unfortunately, all the horror and pain cannot be expressed in words. Thank God, and may God grant health and strength to all good people. Thank God for the meeting with the “Bethlehem” church, where we can have a rest for our souls. Our hearts find peace when we hear the Word of God.
